Alarming Recording Captures Point Police Get Knifed in Ambush
One senior officer who jumped to the assistance of a colleague that got attacked by a blade-wielder was granted the King's Commendation for Courage.
Sgt Tim Ansell struggled against 27-year-old Jacob Brown after he pressed a weapon to the neck of his fellow officer Sgt Marc Foster.
Brown initiated the assault as the officers and their partner, Police Constable Marcus Wolstencroft, were conversing to a motorist after a traffic accident in Whalley Range in summer 2023.
Brown stabbed and slashed the two Sergeant Ansell and Sergeant Foster prior to Police Constable Wolstencroft incapacitated him with a electric weapon.
"Officer knifed," PC Wolstencroft was heard to say over his radio.
Officer-mounted and vehicle camera video released by the agency revealed Brown, that was clothed in black with a hood covering head, approach to Sergeant Foster from behind with a blade outstretched.
He ran into the policeman who lost balance and dropped to the street, after which Sgt Ansell stepped in and attempted to subdue him to the pavement although being continually attacked with the weapon.
PC Wolstencroft drew his Taser and waited for a safe opportunity, ending the fight to an end.
Sgt Ansell was heard stating: "Can I get something on my neck now, I'm bleeding in the throat."
Sgt Ansell suffered two open wounds to his throat and additional injuries to his arms and body, whereas Sergeant Foster received cut injuries.
Officials reported Sgt Foster used his bare hands to stop his colleague's hemorrhaging prior to medical personnel arrived.
The new honor comes subsequent to the trio of policemen won departmental Bravery Awards in October 2023 and the John Egerton Bravery Award from the local officer association in early 2024.
They were also awarded a Area Valor Recognition in July 2024.
"The efforts of the entire team in the end saved themselves and ensured no civilians experienced any harm."
Brown was given to an psychiatric detention in April 2024, as stated by officials.
