Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australian One-Day International Team to Face India
The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-match ODI series facing India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw getting a surprise call-up.
Recent Form Result in Exclusion
The right-hander was left out from the one-day international team after being dismissed for one in each of his two innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a highest score of 47 in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has featured in 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64, but will now work towards a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes
Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a red-ball recall as Australia seek a fix to their batting top-order problems.
Pace Returns and Injury News
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures
Australia have selected a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to seal a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from 29 October.
