Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.
